has-vivid-red-color\">one type of the new coronavirus variants, which was reported from South Africa on November 26, 2021. <\/mark><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Two days later, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated the B.1.1.529 variant as a Variant of Concern (VOC) and named it Omicron in Greek letter order.<\/mark><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VOCs are mutant variants that have been shown to have increased transmissibility, increased virulence, and\/or worsened effectiveness of public health response, diagnosis, treatment, and\/or vaccines. As of January 2022, there are now five VOCs: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41579-021-00535-6\">Click here for details<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ability of the virus itself to enter cells (infectivity)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contagiousness of the infected person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Susceptibility of the uninfected person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Environmental stress on the virus (temperature, humidity, ventilation, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the ability of the virus to invade, <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">the spike protein on the surface of the Omicron variant has a high affinity for ACE2 on the cell surface, which is thought to facilitate cell invasion.<\/span><\/strong> In fact, the Omicron variant is spreading faster than the Delta variant, and in many countries the Omicron variant dominates among new infections. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/enhancing-readiness-for-omicron-(b.1.1.529)-technical-brief-and-priority-actions-for-member-states\">Click here for details<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies tracking contact transmission suggest that the Omicron variant is more transmissible than Delta. Some people infected with Omicron have been asymptomatic, while others have developed pneumonia and died. However, the Omicron variant is thought to be more similar to cold symptoms than other strains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not yet clear whether infection with Omicron is more severe than infection with other mutant variants, but some studies suggest that severity of the Omicron variant tends to be milder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/mrc-global-infectious-disease-analysis\/covid-19\/report-50-severity-omicron\/\">A report from Imperial College London, UK<\/a>, found that &#8220;Omicron-infected patients have a 20-25% lower risk of hospital admission and a 40-45% lower risk of hospitalization for more than one night than Delta-infected patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pure.ed.ac.uk\/ws\/portalfiles\/portal\/245818096\/Severity_of_Omicron_variant_of_concern_and_vaccine_effectiveness_against_symptomatic_disease.pdf\">The University of Edinburgh<\/a> reported a two-thirds reduction in the risk of hospitalization with the Omicron variant compared to the Delta variant, based on hospitalization data from November 1 to December 19. <a href=\"https:\/\/files.ssi.dk\/covid19\/omikron\/statusrapport\/rapport-omikronvarianten-21122021-14tk\">The Danish report<\/a> also stated that 0.6% of those infected with Omicron were hospitalized compared to 1.6% of those infected with other mutants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On these backgrounds, the results of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.hku.hk\/en\/news\/press\/20211215-omicron-sars-cov-2-infection\">a peer-reviewed University of Hong Kong study<\/a> suggest that &#8220;the Omicron variant grows faster in the bronchial tube than Delta and\/or normal variants, in contrast to its relatively very slow growth rate in the lung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the low hospitalization rate due to the Omicron variant should be interpreted with caution for the following reasons, and<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"> it is dangerous to simply assume that &#8220;the Omicron variant do not cause serious illness, so there is no problem even if you are infected<\/span><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a novel mutant variant and it takes time from onset to hospitalization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is unclear whether the decrease in hospitalization rates is purely due to less severe omicron infections or the effect of previous infections or vaccines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Admission criteria may vary from time to time, and more medical data such as oxygen inhalation and ventilator use rates and mortality rates are needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_difference_in_diagnostic_accuracy_of_antigen_kits_and_PCR_to_the_Omicron_variants\"><\/span>What is the difference in diagnostic accuracy of antigen kits and PCR to the Omicron variants?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>In conclusion,<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\"> Omicron variants can be detected by the SARS-CoV-2 PCR diagnostic kit currently in use in Japan. <\/span><\/strong>Recently, PCR kits have been developed to check for the presence of mutations characteristic of omicrons, so that it is possible to know whether the mutation is omicron-like before sequencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for antigen qualitative test kits, the WHO suggests that &#8220;Diagnostic accuracy may not be affected by the Omicron variant.\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/enhancing-readiness-for-omicron-(b.1.1.529)-technical-brief-and-priority-actions-for-member-states\">Click here for details<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_effective_is_the_vaccine_against_the_Omicron_variant\"><\/span><strong>How effective is the vaccine against the Omicron variant?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>An analysis of 147,597 Delta and 68,489 Omicron patients has been reviewed by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for vaccine efficacy (after two and three doses). (Made by AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna) <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/1043807\/technical-briefing-33.pdf\">The result of the report<\/a> is here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two doses of vaccine: Vaccine efficacy against the omicron variant is lower than that of the delta variant, although there is some efficacy against the omicron variants. Vaccine efficacy against the omicron variants is close to zero 20 weeks after two doses of either vaccine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Three doses of vaccine\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Two doses of AstraZeneca, third dose of Pfizer or Moderna<\/strong>: Vaccine efficacy against the Omicron variant increases after 2 to 4 weeks, but only about 60%, and about<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"> 45%<\/span><\/strong> after 5 to 9 weeks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Two doses of Pfizer, third dose of Pfizer<\/strong>: 70% after 1 week,<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"> 45%<\/span><\/strong> after 10 weeks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Two doses of Pfizer, third dose of Moderna<\/strong>: <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">70-75%<\/span><\/strong> until 9 weeks later<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No data on vaccine efficacy of the third dose after two doses of Moderna, as there were no subjects for analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you should be careful in evaluating the estimates because \u201cthis is an observational study, other factors may be involved\u201d, and because \u201cthere are still few cases of infection with the Omicron variant\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It remains to be seen how effective the vaccine will be in preventing severe disease caused by the Omicron variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_possibility_of_reinfection_with_the_Omicron_variant\"><\/span>What is the possibility of reinfection with the Omicron variant?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is &#8220;<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Omicron variants are more likely to be reinfected than other variants<\/span><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soujinkai.or.jp\/himawariNaiHifu\/covid19-omicron-variant\/\">A study from Imperial College London, UK<\/a>, suggests that among people with a history of COVID19 infection, reinfection with the Omicron variant is 5.4 times more likely to occur than reinfection with the Delta variant (6.36 times more likely if unvaccinated, 5.02 times more likely after vaccination).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could also be due to the fact that the Omicron variant is the kind of virus that escapes the immune system produced by infection with other variants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_effective_is_the_treatment_for_the_Omicron_strain\"><\/span><strong>How effective is the treatment for the Omicron strain?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.soujinkai.or.jp\/himawariNaiHifu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/\u85ac-edited.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2054 lazyload\" width=\"538\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/soujinkai.or.jp\/himawariNaiHifu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/\u85ac-edited.webp 1920w, https:\/\/soujinkai.or.jp\/himawariNaiHifu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/\u85ac-edited-300x168.webp 300w, https:\/\/soujinkai.or.jp\/himawariNaiHifu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/\u85ac-edited-1024x575.webp 1024w, https:\/\/soujinkai.or.jp\/himawariNaiHifu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/\u85ac-edited-768x431.webp 768w, https:\/\/soujinkai.or.jp\/himawariNaiHifu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/\u85ac-edited-1536x862.webp 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Various drugs have been developed for the treatment of new coronaviruses, and the drugs approved by January 2022 can be divided into the following three types according to their roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Drugs that prevent the virus from entering the body (neutralizing antibody drugs)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drugs that inhibit the growth of viruses<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drugs that reduce excessive immune response and inflammation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of these, <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">drugs that inhibit viral replication and drugs that suppress excessive immune response and inflammation are expected to be effective in the treatment of omicron infection.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, some antibody drugs that bind to the surface of viruses and prevent them from entering the body are less likely to bind if there are mutations in their target sites.
